OXO Good Grips Wire Cheese Slicer customer reviews:
|
I wish there had been reviews of this to warn me I should have checked out other reviews because Oxo makes another item almost identical to this that has more bad reviews than you can shake a stick at. I bought this to replace another wire cheese slicer I got in a supermarket years ago that was starting to show its' age. I'm glad I didn't throw it away when this came, because I'm back to using it after about a week. Like all Oxo products I've had this looked and felt great, and like all of them it worked great as well...at first. Unfortunately, like a few Oxo products, this was not very well built. The design, ergonomics and function were all first class, but it broke after about a week. The wire snapped out and there is no way to replace it. Some of the better wire slicers have screws in the handle to allow the user to replace broken or loose wires, some even come with replacement wires, but not this one. I'm really dissapointed because Oxo makes some really wonderful products, but they also turn out a real turkey every now and then and this is one of them. Don't buy it!
Very Inadequate This was not good at cutting firmer cheese such as sharp cheddar or swiss. After about the third slice of cutting some cheddar the wire broke. It is now in the landfill.
Short Lived Don't buy this if you expect to have it around for a while. Mine worked great for 3 uses and then ping, the wire snapped.
Amazon needs to stock a Westmark Rollschnitt. The one I inherited is 40 years old and still going strong. It will be in my will when I move on to the big chachui.
OXO Is the Best When It Comes to Kitchen Products! OXO has done it again with another wonderful kitchen product that feels nice and sturdy in your hand, yet gets the job done and looks good! I am a big fan of all OXO products and recommend them all around!
A Nice Solid Unit, But Wire Is Fragile While this unit is intact, it is a solid, hefty, easy to handle device for slicing cheese. However, the slicing wire eventually pulls out at one end or the other. When this happens, the wire becomes too slack to slice properly, and eventually the slicer fails altogether.
When ours failed, we contacted Oxo, and the company sent a replacement. However, the wire on the replacement has now failed. We have not decided whether to continue getting replacements, although in theory we probably could.
I notice that Oxo now has a model with replaceable wires: OXO Good Grips Wire Cheese Slicer with Replaceable Wires, with the replacement wires shown here: OXO Good Grips Wire Replacements for OXO Wire Cheese Slicer. This unit costs about 25% more than the fixed-wire product, but it may be worth it to have the ability to replace the wires immediately rather than go through the exercise of making a claim under the guarantee. Buying the replaceable unit plus a set of 3 replacement wires would cost more than 1-1/2 times what this fixed-wire unit costs, but for that price you would effectively have four rounds of slicer use (the original wire plus the three replacements). Even then, it's not as though the cost would be prohibitive.
In sum, this unit is fine while it lasts, but it seems destined to fail sooner or later. I don't have personal experience with the replaceable-wire unit, but it would be worth a serious look by anyone shopping for a cheese slicer.
