I have never experienced the "tearing" as described above. I looked for them on this site so I could give them as a gift to friends. Sharp? Yes, Sharp. Very good knives. Be very careful when washing, I cut myself twice already (the first time I wasn't even aware of it for a few hours). In the description the maker indicates that the knives should be hand washed and dried, and not soaked... That's because the handles are very stain-saturated, if left wet the stain bleeds out onto the blade. Nevertheless, they were made to cut, and that's exactly what they do. Regarding the price, I bought them on sale, and I think that the sale price should be the retail price to make the set a good value. Therefore I compromised and purchased the J.A. Henckels Twin Gourmet 8-piece steak knives for less than $100 at Amazon. They are light knives, neat looking (slim) without heavy looking handles, so that you can add to everyday table setting. Serves the purpose. Wish they were a bit more substantial. Otherwise, okay for everyday usage.
