Each knife belongs in a specific space and it clearly tells you on the block. I have not seen anything like this one-regardles of price. so, number 12 knife belongs only in hole # 12. easy to use. Excellent HI, We are enjoying this block very much. We have been waiting a long time for this one. And it is very well put together and it has the name and # of the knifes on the block which makes it easy to put back. It is not a small item and takes a bit of space on the counter however the amount of room that it frees up in a drawer is worth the space it takes. and the knifes are easy to access.
