Vornado 540B High-Velocity Personal Clip-On 2-Speed Air Circulator customer reviews:
|
Great personal fan Although this is marketed as an air circulator, I use it as a fan. I have it pointed at me from across the room in my home office, which gets to be quite warm in the summer with my computer and six monitors.
On the lower setting, it is super quiet. Quiet enough that I can easily use the fan and phone at the same time. Medium setting is a good bit more noisy, but that would be too much air, so it's a moot point.
You can swivel the arm in just about any direction. There is a screw in the arm that you can loosen to adjust the orientation of the fan. I had to take advantage of this to get the fan where I wanted it.
This product does not rotate while running. Wherever you point the airflow, that's where it stays.
Despite the price, I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
Moves a lot of air and very quiet I purchased the Vornado 540B for my RV, to move air around a bit. The fan actually moves a large amount of air, and it does so very quietly. Since people may be trying to talk and enjoy themselves, the fan noise was important, and while not completely silent, the noise is not very bothersome at all, just a bit of background. The clip is really well done, which allows us to move it around the RV with ease. From the picture, it looks like a normal squeeze clip... but it is not. The jaws are on hinges, so they can stay flat at nearly any angle as they are opened up. This allows it to grip shelves and chairbacks, and just about anything else. The spring in the clip is amazingly strong, which is needed since the fan is no featherweight. All in all, it's a Vornado and it maintains all the things people like Vornado's for. Not bad at all.
Too large, too loud Was hoping to find a fan to clip to bedside to provide comfort while sleeping, however, this fan's two settings made it such that it would either blow too little or be too loud and intense. Its size also proved difficult to deal with.
In the end, I found that Holmes HACP7W 7-Inch Clip-On Personal Fan was what I was seeking.
The only thing bigger than this fan is it's price. Powerful, but huge for a clip on. Good for a garage, but not a bed. When my last clip-on fan finally bit the dust after quite a few years, I thought I may have outgrown my night-time hotness and wouldn't need one. But alas, as much as I tried to deny it, I was as hot as ever and had to look for another fan for my headboard.
So onto Amazon.com I went and looked up all the options for clip-on fans that I could easily attach to the headboard of my bed. I double-checked my research on a couple of other sites and narrowed it down to two.. one of which was the Vornado 540B. I was seduced by the Vornado's reputation for power and it's ability to move so much air around in such a small package.
After purchasing the fan, I realized that small is a relative term. It's true that the 540B is small... when compared to an industrial sized air conditioning fan that's housed in it's own room and easily cools 37 floors in an office building. You may be able to get away with calling it small if you compare it to one of those home A/C units that sits outside on a slab of concrete. But, compared to other clip-on fans, this thing is huge.
When I first got the fan and saw the size of the box, I was all excited and thought, "Wow, this thing sure is packed well!" Thinking that the rather large size of the box contained extra packing material to keep this marvel of technology safe during shipping, I was a little taken aback when I opened the box and removed the (still well packaged) fan. That's when I realized it was bigger than my head!
I thought that maybe it just looked large and anyways, it will be clipped on to the headboard and once there, it won't be noticeable at all. Well, the clip is certainly very strong and durable so I had no problem clipping it to the thick part of my headboard.. well, it took two hands to open the clip. I'd definitely recommend keeping it away from small children and animals while it's open or it may end up as one of those bear traps in the woods and clamp down tight if it slips from your hands.
Once the fan was secured on my headboard, I turned it on and enjoyed the breeze it produced at the low setting. It definitely would do the job of keeping me cool on most nights. I then tried the hi setting and though it gave me the assurance that I'd be able to stay cool even on the warmest nights, I could no longer hear the trash truck that was emptying the trash bin right outside my window. And I think my wife tried calling to me from across the bed, but all I could see was her mouth moving and arms flailing as she tried to stay upright in the face of hurricane force winds that came out of this little Vornado!
Well, I ended up returning the fan to Amazon. A very painless and easy process by the way. My decision was made final when I went to get into bed that night and I felt as though a third person was in bed with us. It wasn't that bad actually, but the fan is certainly way too large in my opinion to act as a practical headboard fan.
It's certainly a powerful fan and quiet on the low setting. It would work well in a more open space like a garage or workshop, or perhaps even on a canopy bed where you can place it away from your headboard and head some. I kept feeling that I'd wake up and bump my head on it, being so close to my head.
AVOID VORNADO LIKE YOU WOULD THE PLAGUE
I'm posting this on all Vornado listings on Amazon, as all potential purchasers need to be aware of the shortcomings of Vornado's warranty policy.
I purchased two fans from Vornado direct. Both were larger, more expensive units (280 & 285) that had either ten year or lifetime warranties.
One year after the purchase, the 285 began to vibrate upon start-up. The fan blades would barely revolve, and the fan emitted a loud rattling sound.
I called Vornado's Customer Service and spoke to a Paula. Upon describing the problem, she stated the motor was bad and e-mailed an RMA. However, she told me I would be required to pay for the return shipping.
As this was a large, heavy, floor standing unit, I told her that I would be returning the motor only. She gave no indication that was a problem.
The motor was delivered to Vornado. 5 days later, they called and refused to perform the service without the remainder of the fan assembly. They also had the temerity to tell me that I had voided the warranty by removing the motor, and wanted to charge me for the repair, but again, only AFTER I spent additional money to send the rest of the frame back!
I have 3 problems with Vornado's actions in this matter: 1.) I had to return a defective IN WARRANTY product at my expense 2.) I told Paula upfront I would only be sending back the motor, and she didn't object, and 3.) where was I supposed to get a box large enough for a plus-three-foot-tall, floor-standing unit?
Disgusted, I told Vornado to throw the motor away and forget the whole thing. When I disassembled the unit to extract the motor, I found the fan to be of a cheap design and construction, so it would be possible that I would have a similar re-occurrence of the same problem in the future. Why waste further money on something that might fail again?
BTW: Both phone calls involved LONG hold times to get a customer service person. So, if you're forced to call them regarding service, be prepared to have something else to do while you wait.
Vornado might claim to stand behind their customers. After dropping the original +$150 on the two fans, going out-of-pocket for the shipping to return the motor, and having to dispose of the useless, motorless 285 frame, I can definitely attest to having felt Vornado there. My advice: Find another fan from a better company. Vornado brags about how their products are built in the U.S.; who cares, if you're not going to support your customers?
