Cameron's Products Smoke 'n Fold Smoker, Carbon Steel customer reviews:
|
Where There Was Smoke, There Was Fire! I initially received the wrong product from Amazon.com but their customer service department reacted quickly and sent the right one. I give them Five Stars for their promptness.
The reason I bought this Cameron in the first place was because it was inexpensive and unique in design (foldable).
The Cameron smoker is fairly easy to assemble with the exception of the four footings that are slid onto each corner. I used a hammer to tap them on, into place, which causes you to scrap the finish off the unit. Lousy amateur afterthought by Cameron.
This raises the base of the smoker off the floor. A 'notice' advised that they were required due to the electrical cord melting with the previous models, that lacked the footings.
The reason I am pointing out the footings is because if you plan on taking the smoker apart after each use, it will be a hassle to do so.
Here is the bad news. I prepared approximately two or three lbs. of Sockeye salmon and a pound of scallops in the brine over night. I hadn't smoked meat for many years so I kept it light for the maiden voyage.
On the following day (07Sept08), I placed the cured meat on the racks and plugged in the smoker. The alder chips started to do their magic within a few minutes but right after that, I heard a loud pop/crackle sound and then saw a flash of light from the base. I first thought that the wood chips caught on fire. I looked through the little door where access to the wood chip pan is located. I removed the pan and observed the heating element had stopped working. On the bottom of the chip pan, there was a sizable scorch mark on it. This was the reason for the flash that I saw coming from the base. The problem appeared to be a shortening out of the heating element. Operating time was approximately 15 minutes in total.
I'm fortunate that I did not prepare a large amount of meat. Needless to say that the salmon & scallops did not get done as planned. I ended up doing a seafood pasta dish instead. You have to make lemonade when given lemons.
Speaking of lemons, I would avoid buying this potentially dangerous electrical fire hazard. What a disappointment! I have asked for a refund.
This Cameron unit was not shipped to Canada by Amazon. I had to use one of those shipping warehouses in the State of Washington. This will be my third trip over the border for this single order. This has costs me more than I intended on paying. The gas, the warehouse fees and the time in general. I don't think I will purchase another product where I will be required to picking it up as I had done with the smoker. Once bitten, twice shy.
Update! Out of common courtesy I contacted Cameron's Products to inform them of the potential safety issue. I explained what transpired. I was then informed that there are thousands of their smokers out there and this is the first complaint of this fashion. I advised Cameron's that they should check their stock and to contact the makers of the heating element, to play on the safe side.
After I explained that it was going to be returned for a refund, they offered to send me replacement parts (element, power cord and chip pan). There was no reason for me to doubt his explanation that this may have been a one time incident, so I agreed to accept his offer.
It's been four days since I spoke to Cameron's but no parts to date.
I will do another followup, when it is practical.
Works fine for veggies and peppers I needed a compact smoker to make homemade chipotles and other non-meat smoked products. This unit is perfect for that use, holds a good amount of food, and disassembles easily for cleaning and storing away. Try hickory smoked tomatoes!
If you plan to do small items like chilies, plan to buy some metal mesh to cover the racks; smaller foods will fall through the factory-supplied racking.
It was fairly easy to assemble, although I would recommend the manufacturer update the instructions to reflect product design changes. The wood chip pan I received does NOT have a removable handle that doubles as a screw driver, as stated in the written directions, nor can it be inserted/removed via the little pan door at the bottom due to the now-attached handle.
I also received wing-topped bolts instead of the screws it was supposed to come with, and the bolts don't fit in the pre-drilled holes properly. This doesn't affect the functionality of the unit at all, it just made putting it together a longer procedure.
It takes a bit longer to achieve a finished product due to the folding design; none of the seams seal, so more smoke escapes. That isn't an issue for me, but is something you should consider when choosing a smoker. We also own a Smoke Tex smoker for doing fish, ribs and other meats.
